THE MIEA JOURNEY
The Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) is the oldest and largest real estate association representing real estate practitioners in Malaysia.
In 1974 a handful of dedicated practicing real estate agents who had the vision to unite practitioners met regularly to eventually form what was then called the 'Malaysian Association of Real Estate Agents (MAREA), the predecessor of MIEA.
They included the late Paul Lee, the late Tony YT Lee, the late T. Mahima Singh, Joseph Peh, Colonel Gill, Thinahara Kumar and Ernest YY Cheong. Mr Paul Lee became its first Protem President.
MAREA was officially registered when its inaugural constitution was approved on 14 April 1977 by the then Minister of Housing and Local Government, YB Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui, who gave us his blessings and support to the formation of the association that would be responsible for the growth of Real Estate Agents in Malaysia.
Mr. Ernest Cheong was elected as the Charter President of the association in 1977. The membership, having begun with only 37 Founding Members, quickly rose to 63 members within a year. In 1984, the council went on a membership drive to recruit members from across Malaysia which resulted in an increase of members to 163 by the end of that year.
The Association then decided to change its image from that of a trade association to that of a professional institute. MAREA was thus officially changed to the "Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents" (MIEA) on the 3rd of May 1989.
In 1984 the membership grew dramatically from 369 to 632 members under the leadership of Puan Khatijah Abdullah. With the increasing number of members, branches were established in Penang, Perak, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan.
In line with globalisation, a bilateral co-operation agreement between MIEA and the National
Association of Realtors (NAR) was signed on 22 October 1994 together with bilateral agreements signed in 1995 with the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia (REIWA), Association of Singapore Realtors and Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ).
The official opening of our wholly owned MIEA premises in 3 Two Square and the launching of the National Real Estate Awards (NREA) in 2008 under the Presidency of Soma Sundram was indeed, a poignant and dignifying moment in the history of the institute; an attestation of the growth of the institute and achievement of its membership.
Another milestone was the organising of the Negotiators Certification Course for Real Estate
Negotiators throughout the country under the Presidency of Siva Shanker, which would go on to help support the Institute’s financial sustainability and growth.
The Institute has now adopted several annual programmes including the Malaysian Real Estate Convention Summit (MAREC SUMMIT), the National Real Estate Awards (NREA) and the Malaysian Annual Secondary and Primary Property Exhibition (MASPEX).
We continue to be the largest real estate training Institute in the country providing NCC classes, CPD & other educational programmes.
Another important point in our history was the amendment of the constitution in 2017, after 13 years, which allows PEAs (Probationary Estate Agents) the right to vote and the election of a President Elect unique only to MIEA.
Under the presidency of Eric Lim, the membership grew from 1,500 to 6,500 REAs, PEAs &
RENs in 2019. We are now the single largest voice for Real Estate Practitioners with state
branches in Penang, Perak, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.
The institute's future vision as per our Constitution is to establish an 'Estate Agents Board' to
protect and advance the cause of our profession and its practitioners. With the theme “United, Relevant & Progressive", the institute is ready to meet any new challenges ahead.
MIEA also provided the leadership to establish the ASEAN Real Estate Network Alliance (ARENA), a grouping of eight National Real Estate Associations to provide a Regional Networking Platform for Real Estate Practitioners.
We can proudly say MIEA has matured to be a fully functional and purposeful association offering varied membership services and benefits. We are poised to add value to our members and the Real Estate Practice. May God guide us in our endeavour to be a United, Relevant and Progressive association.
