Property management firm denies imposing racist rule in Cyberjaya neighbourhood

PETALING JAYA: The property management firm of a premium residential neighbourhood in Cyberjaya accused of barring Africans from renting homes in the area has denied imposing any such rule, saying it was likely a decision by the individual owner.

Nurdeen Fazwi, a partner at PMC Facilities and Real Estate Sdn Bhd, said the company had never set any prohibitions regarding the nationality of tenants at the Jewel of Grasmere at Setia Eco Glades.

“There is no resolution in any of our by-laws in terms of nationality (for home rentals),” he told FMT. “Nothing is mentioned.

“I assume this is the owner’s restriction. I strongly believe this is the case.”

On Wednesday, FMT reported that the management of the development, built by a top property company, had imposed a rule barring Africans from renting homes there.

A Libyan expat by the name of Omar Amer Abou Abouabdalla had said that he was informed of the rule by his property agent.

Checks with several sales agents confirmed Omar’s claims.

However, Nurdeen said this was inaccurate.

“It is misleading to say it was set by the management,” he added.

He said the Jewel of Grasmere was part of a phased development by SP Setia called Setia Marina. He added that the phase directly before Grasmere had seen residents from various countries including Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Yemen and Pakistan.

“We have never restricted any nationality or enforced such a policy.”
