AMPANG: Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin says a law to address issues including racial discrimination in the property market will be brought to Parliament early next year.
Speaking to reporters after an event at the Pandan Fire and Rescue Department station, she said the law, known as the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA), was still being drafted.
“We expect that (process) to finish at the end of this year. By early next year, we will bring it to Parliament,” she said after a Hari Raya Aidiladha event with firemen here.
In January, Zuraida said the RTA would help address racial discrimination following incidents of landlords refusing to accept tenants due to their ethnicity.
She said then that the new law would follow similar legislation in Scotland.
Speaking today, Zuraida who is also Ampang MP said she welcomed any move by her former party PKR to contest her seat in the next general election.
She was responding to PKR information chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who said at the party’s information convention last Sunday that PKR would take back her seat as well as that of former deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali who is MP for Gombak.
“We are professional, we will contest in a healthy manner,” she said, adding that she was proud PKR had chosen to hold its information convention in her constituency.
“I welcome them to come, otherwise they are sleeping. I also ask them not to forget about their respective areas.”
Zuraida and Azmin were sacked for joining forces with PPBM, PAS and Barisan Nasional to form the Perikatan Nasional government.
On political developments in Sabah, Zuraida said they were still awaiting an official announcement from the governor that the state assembly had been dissolved.
